March to Statewide AFT
Unity AFT members at Rutgers have voted to
affiliate with the New Jersey State Federation of Teachers (NJSFT). Rutgers’
three units had formerly been affiliated as a separate arm of AFT New Jersey.
The three units are the AFT/AAUP unit representing the faculty, teaching
assistants and other full-time faculty, URA representing the administrators,
and PTL representing the part-time lecturers. Although the move has been
approved by the Rutgers’ units, the official move will be in January. Rutgers affiliation with NJSFT adds about
7500 members to the NJSFT. The NJSFT is made up of Pre-K thru 12 schools’
personnel, the adjuncts, and units at two community colleges Suffolk and
Raritan. AFT has long been attempting to unify their divergent locals into
one large super local. The merger between the Rutgers units and the NJSFT is
a giant step in that direction. |
